To be stuck in the middle...

I had a interesting conversation this afternoon with my handy-man. Now realize, this guy has been wandering in and out of my house for years. He has a key! His wife and kids know me and he probably knows how my home functions better than I do. Anyway, he commented that some young snot was bemoaning turning 30 and how old he felt. Well, my handyman laughed and told him to wait until he hit 45! No one could believe this guy who climbs around the house, digs in the cement, etc. is 45.

Well, I know how old he is as I am just a few years younger. The questions really becomes...when do I start to be "old?" When I was little, mommy was "old." Well, my mom started having kids when she was young. By the time she was my age her oldest 18 and her youngest was 6. She was no where near OLD! At 73 she is still not old...I hope I get her genes!

I work with college kids and when they hear how old I am the reaction is almost comical! NO WAY!!! I don't think I look my age and I am pretty sure I don't ACT my age. So...when do I know when I am old? Since I don't have kids to "inform" me of that (like I know I informed my parents) who tells me?

Anyway, I must say I am enjoying this time of life. I am neither young and naive, nor am I old and embittered. I was going to say young and foolish but in many ways foolishness simply changes as you climb in years. I am still foolish in many respects and I thrive on that foolishness as it keeps me young.

So...no matter your age, realize that it is only a number, a chronological reminder of the years God has give you thus far, to enjoy His blessings. Have you done with them all you could? If not, start. If you have, praise HIM daily for that. You are only old if you allow the world to impose itself on your blessed state of being a living, breathing, miracle of His creation.

  1. I have often pondered the relative nature of age myself! What is "old" and what is "young." I think it's merely a state of mind or an attitude. You can be as old or as young as you want to be!

Love the last part; you nailed it!
